Drought, famine, economic crisis… Has Yemen reached a dead-end?

The Global Humanitarian Forum, headed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, announced in a report published on May 29th that global warming was causing 300,000 deaths each year. Among the countries most threatened is Yemen.
According to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Yemen is the most fragile country in the Middle East in terms of food resources. Yemen is bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and by the desert Rub’ al Khali, one of the hottest in the world.
The current situation in Yemen is particularly concerning considering the nation’s other worries. The country is currently plagued by drought, political unrest and the global economic crisis. However, famine remains a large problem as well. “We are experiencing one of our worst years in terms of agricultural production, with a very severe drought,” says Abdul Karim al-Iryani, an advisor to President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
